Free Axolotl Crochet Pattern Notes

Meet the Squishy Axolotl crochet pattern! This adorable amphibian is the latest addition to my popular “Squishy” series, which also includes the Squishy Chicken and Squishy Giraffe patterns. It’s a reimagined, squishy-sized version of my original Plush Axolotl, making it a perfect companion for fans of the original design. This cutie is just the right size for small hands, cuddly play, or a quick, fun project to add some mystical magic to your amigurumi collection.

With its cute little legs and frilly fins, the Squishy Axolotl is bursting with personality. The body is intentionally under-stuffed for that signature “squishy” feel, giving it a soft, huggable texture that’s as fun to hold as it is to make.

    Materials you’ll need

To get started making this free axolotl crochet pattern, you’ll want to gather all your materials first.

    You will need:

    • Main color: 90g blanket yarn
    • Fin color: 10g blanket yarn
    • 12mm safety eyes
    • Crochet Hook in Size 4.5mm
    • Tapestry Needle
    • Polyfil
    • stitch marker

    Notes:

This axolotl’s tail, body and head is made from the bottom to the head, all in one piece. You will insert a neck strengthener which will help with the shape and stability of the head, while allowing you to stuff the bottom VERY lightly and stuff the head a little more.

The fins, tail fin, arms and feet are attached at the end.

The arms are attached with a long needle. The video for that is here.

You can use safety eyes or try out embroidered eyes so it would be safe for a baby/toddler. I have a collection of embroidery videos here.

Substitute yarns could be Premier Basix Chenille yarn or Big Twist from Joann’s. You may need to change the hook size if you change the yarn.

[Chain 6. Turn and SC in the second chain from the hook. SC in the remaining 4 chains. (total of 5 SC)] (repeat for a total of 3 fins)
Attach three fins on each side of the face. I attached them on rounds 19-22 (or at least close to that, give or take)
Line the first fin about 2-3 stitches from the eye, right on the side of the head. Double check that they look to be about the same distance from the eyes so that both sides seem even. Pin them in place to make sure. Use tails to attach.
