things that actually help keep my craft space and yarn storage functional and make my life easier.

Crochet Organization and Yarn Storage Hacks

Crocheting is one of the best ways to relax and unwind—until your yarn stash turns into a tangled jungle, your hooks disappear into the couch abyss, and your stuffing somehow spreads across the entire room. (Seriously, how does that happen?) If you’ve ever spent more time searching for your tools than actually crocheting, you’re not alone! I’ve been there, and after a lot of trial and error, I’ve found some game-changing crochet organization tools and hacks for yarn storage that make my crafting life so much easier.

Whether you have a dedicated craft room or just a favorite spot on the couch, these are my top picks for keeping your crochet space neat, functional, and inspiring. Let’s dive in!

My Absolute Favorite Crochet Products + Organizers

If you love staring at your yarn collection as much as you love crocheting with it, modular cube shelves are a must-have. These shelves let you store your yarn in a way that’s both practical and pretty, so you can actually see what you have instead of digging through a chaotic pile of skeins.

    Why I Love It:

    • Affordable and customizable—add more cubes as your stash (inevitably) grows!
    • Keeps yarn easy to see and grab
    • Perfect for storing books, patterns, and tools, too

Pro Tip: Use clear bins inside the cubes for scrap yarn or small skeins so they don’t get lost in the shuffle.

    2. Couch Cup Tray: The Crocheter’s Best Friend for Cozy Crafting

Let’s be real—most of my crochet time happens on the couch. That’s why I swear by my couch cup tray! This little lifesaver holds my drink, a snack (because crocheting is hard work!), and all the tiny essentials like stitch markers and scissors. No more precariously balancing a cup of coffee on the armrest or digging between cushions for lost hooks!

    Why I Love It:

    • Keeps everything within arm’s reach while crocheting
    • Helps prevent spills (because we all know that horror)
    • Great for small spaces—no craft room required!
    • Available in different materials to match your decor

    3. Yarn Drum Bag: Perfect for On-the-Go Projects (or Keeping Stuffing Contained!)

A good yarn drum bag is a lifesaver for travel projects. With multiple compartments for yarn, hooks, and accessories, it keeps everything neat and tangle-free. But my favorite way to use mine? Storing polyfill stuffing! Especially because I buy mine in giant 20 lb. boxes! No more fluffy explosions in my craft area—just a nice, tidy bag of stuffing ready whenever I need it.

    Why I Love It:

    • Makes crochet-on-the-go a breeze
    • Prevents yarn tangles with built-in dividers
    • Doubles as perfect storage for stuffing
    • Comes with shoulder straps for easy carrying

    4. Bead Organizer for Safety Eyes (Including the Ultimate Stacking Version!)

If you’ve ever lost a tiny safety eye in the middle of a project, you know the struggle. A bead organizer is perfect for keeping them sorted by size and color. And if you want to take it to the next level? A stacking bead organizer! This gives you extreme safety eye storage—great for collectors (or those of us who can never have too many options!).

    Why I Love It:

    • Keeps tiny safety eyes from getting lost
    • Easy to see all your sizes at a glance
    • Stacking version is amazing for large collections
    • Also great for small notions like buttons and tiny embellishments

Pro Tip: Label each compartment so you can grab the right size at a glance!

    5. Rubber Totes with Flat Bottoms (in Two Sizes!)

Sometimes you just need a sturdy, no-fuss storage option, and rubber totes with flat bottoms are perfect. Plus, how fun is this color?! I love keeping them in two sizes—one for larger projects and yarn hauls, and a smaller one for WIPs, like amigurumi, and frequently used supplies. Stack them, tuck them away, or keep them out for easy access—whatever works best for you and your crochet organization!

    Why I Love It:

    • Durable and easy to stack
    • Great for storing yarn, stuffing, or finished projects
    • The flat bottom keeps them from tipping over (a must!)
    • Easy to label and organize

Pro Tip: Use the smaller size for project storage and the larger size for bulk yarn or stuffing!

    6. Rolling Bins for Storing Projects

Ever need to move your WIPs from room to room? These bins make it possible! These stackable bins not only keep projects organized but also feature front-opening cupboard doors for easy access. They are more like furniture, but light enough to easily move. I also love using mine to store my completed projects—keeping them cute and dust-free while on display!

    Why I Love It:

    • Perfect for moving projects between rooms
    • Keeps everything contained while still accessible
    • Great for small spaces!

Pro Tip: Get one with a lid to keep projects dust-free when not in use

(take a peek at some cute Plush Ballerinas and Mix & Make Unicorns and some patterns that are not even out yet!)

    7. Under-the-Bed Yarn Storage

If you’re running out of space for yarn storage (been there!), under-the-bed storage bins are an amazing option. They keep your stash tidy, dust-free, and out of sight while still being easy to access when needed.

    Why I Love It:

    • Great for small spaces
    • Keeps yarn organized and protected
    • Easy to pull out and slide back under the bed

Pro Tip: Sort yarn by color or fiber type to make grabbing what you need easier!

    8. Zippered Pill Pouches for Needles, Stitch Markers, and More

Those little zippered pill pouches? Lifesavers for crochet organization. They’re perfect for keeping tiny crochet notions like needles, stitch markers, and buttons in one place. Plus, they’re small enough to tuck into any project bag for on-the-go convenience! This is actually one of those things I use for my everyday life too – they’re so useful!!

    Why I Love It:

    • Keeps tiny notions organized and easy to find
    • Small enough to fit in any bag
    • Great for travel projects

Pro Tip: These are great if you are making amigurumi on the go, and don’t want to lose your safety eyes!

    9. Big Zippered Pouches for Storing Project Pieces

If you work on large projects with multiple parts, big zippered pouches are a must. They help keep everything together so you don’t end up losing an arm or leg (of your amigurumi, of course) between crochet sessions. It’s also great if you’re batching! This is another one of those things I use all the time in regular life as well.

    Why I Love It:

    • Keeps all pieces of a project together
    • Prevents small parts from getting lost
    • Great for organizing projects by stage (crocheted pieces, stuffing, finishing touches)

Pro Tip: Label each pouch with the project name so you can grab and go!

    10. Hair Clips to Keep Yarn Ends in Place

Loose yarn ends driving you crazy? Hair clips to the rescue! These are so helpful for keeping wound yarn cakes and balls neat and preventing unraveling while in yarn storage or between uses.

    Why I Love It:

    • Stops yarn from coming undone
    • Easy to clip and remove without damage
    • Perfect for storing partially used skeins

Pro Tip: Clip a small piece of paper in with the brand and color so you don’t forget!

Staying organized doesn’t have to be overwhelming! With the right tools, you can spend less time searching for supplies and more time crocheting. Whether you’re looking for better yarn storage, smarter ways to wrangle WIPs, or just a few handy fixes for everyday crochet chaos, these tools can make a big difference.

    1. Thanks!!
Every one of these things is affordable and so useful.
I already use some of these things.
I love, love my modular shelves, mine has little doors; it’s so worth putting it together.
The thing I’m getting right away is the one of the couch tray thingies. I checked it out on AZ and then some of the suggested ones. I like yours for the silicone insert because it’ll help keep my coffee warm and I thought crocheting a fitted coaster to catch any drips would be cute. Also the phone/tablet stand is inspired.
I like the various bags, all the colors!! I always keep my WIP’s in a plastic storage bag but the mesh ones are better and, again, affordable. Also you could thread the yarn through the holes in the rubber one.
      So many fabulous suggestions!
      You rock.

    2. I purchased a yarn spinner. Makes yarn more stackable, and it pulls from the center, so it doesn’t roll around while crocheting. I love it

    3. When I have many WIP going on I like to keep the crochet hook and of course the pattern in the tote I am using. This does leave you with a lot of the same size hooks but at least your not looking for a hook all over.
Now my husband calls me a bag lady.
      Love your site.

    4. I use the store brand or Dollar store “Ziplock-type” bags in a variety of sizes. Small pieces, like eyes, go in the snack size. You can put each size of eyes into its own bag (labeling each with a Sharpie) then all of the bags inside a larger bag. I have my 60″ tape measure in a snack bag. I keep all the packages of needs in a sandwich bag. Gallon size freezer bags are perfect to hold the pieces of amigurumi work-in-process. Since those are typically reused, I don’t label them with a Sharpie. Instead, I put a print-out that shows the name of the project at the top, in large bold print, then the details: the hook size, list of yarns, and dated started (I have a OneNote Template that I use for these). This way, in case I get distracted and don’t get back to the project right away, I have all the info I need to continue it.
