Free Unicorn Crochet Pattern – Mix & Make

Pinterest Hidden Image

This free unicorn crochet pattern is made to be mixed and matched! You can choose any of the bodies to go with the head! Three different unicorns in one pattern!

Free Unicorn Crochet Pattern Notes

This free unicorn crochet pattern is unique-the pattern for the head is the same, but you can get three totally different patterns with the bodies! This is the first in a new series for me. I am calling it my Mix & Make patterns, because you can mix up the body and make something completely different! It’s part of my August Crochet-A-long! If you want to join in the fun, make sure you’re a part of my Facebook group. There will be prizes and extra tips and tricks and I’ll be answering questions along the way!

You will love how quickly this crochet unicorn works up with blanket yarn. With endless color and body combinations, you can customize this in so many different ways. After a lot of trial and error, I found that I prefer Bernat Baby Blanket in Vanilla for the bodies. In my opinion, it is the perfect off-white color and the texture works really well. You can, of course, go for a brighter white. I just hesitate to make toys in pure white, but that is coming from a mom of three boys, so take it for what you will!

This pattern uses three different types of yarn. Bernat Blanket Baby in Vanilla, as I mentioned above, is used for the body, Premier Parfait Chunky for the mane and tail, and worsted weight yarn for the horn. I also have a plush yarn pattern for the horn, if you prefer. You can choose to work with different yarn, just keep in mind that although many yarns are classified the same, they can work up much differently.

The head for each pattern is the same. Then you will have the Chubby Standing body, the Long Legged Stuffy with movable arms and legs, and the Big Footed Snuggler. The Big Footed Snuggler has a super cool trick to keep the feet “stuffed” but it doesn’t use traditional stuffing. This way you can get the shape but also keep the cuddly snuggler feel and not have the stuffing move into the body!

No matter what pattern you are making, start with the head. Then you can use the Table of Contents to navigate to the pattern of whatever body you prefer to use!

    Notes:

This unicorn is made to be mixed and matched! You can choose any of the bodies to go with the head! Three different unicorns in one pattern! The ears, horn, and mane are attached at the end.

You can use safety eyes or try out embroidered eyes so it would be safe for a baby/toddler. I have a collection of embroidery videos here.

Substitute yarns could be regular Bernat Blanket, Premier Basix Chenille yarn or Big Twist from Joann’s. You may need to change the hook size if you change the yarn.

Mix & Make Unicorn Head Pattern

    Head

    Starting with the snout:
Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 6.
Round 2: SC INC in each around. (12)
Round 3: SC in the first, SC INC in the next. Repeat around. (18)
Rounds 4: SC in each around. (18)
Round 5: SC in the first 2, SC INC in the next. Repeat around. (24)
Round 6: SC INC in the next 6 stitches. SC in the remaining 18. (30)
Round 7: SC in the first, SC INC in the next. Repeat for a total of 6 times. SC in the remaining 18. (36)
Rounds 8-10: SC in each around. (36) *3 rows*
Round 11: SC in the first 4, INV DEC in the next. Repeat around. (30)
Round 12: SC in each around. (30)

Add safety eyes between rows 6 and 7 about 6 stitches apart. These are the rows that go up from the snout, kind of like the forehead. Center them using the increases. Begin stuffing here, and continue to stuff as you close.

Round 13: SC in the first 3, INV DEC in the next. Repeat around. (24)
Round 14: SC in the first 2, INV DEC in the next. Repeat around. (18)
Round 15: SC in the first, INV DEC in the next. Repeat around. (12)
Round 16: INV DEC in each around. (6)
    Sew the remaining hole closed.

Optional: I lightly shaped the front of the nose by using a piece of the same vanilla yarn. Going from the bottom of the head gently “pinching” the top of the nose, I went up and down through each stitch on round 4. It helps if you do not pull the yarn too tightly, because that makes the shaping more visible. You can check out the the video here!

    Pointed Ears

In a magic circle, SC 8. DO NOT CLOSE.
Chain 1 and turn. SC INC 4x. Chain 2, pulling tightly each time. SC INC in the remaining 4 stitches. Fasten off and sew the bottom ends together with a few stitches. Attach them around round 14, positioned above the eyes.

    Worsted Weight Horn

Round 1: In a magic circle, 6 SC.
Round 2: SC in each around.
Round 3: SC in first, SC INC in next. Repeat around. (9)
Round 4-5: SC in each around.
Round 6: SC in first 2, SC INC in next. Repeat around. (12)
Round 7-13: SC in each around.
Fasten off and lightly stuff. Attach about 2 rounds up from the eyes.

    Plush Yarn Horn

Round 1: In a magic circle, 6 SC.
Round 2: SC in each around.
Round 3: SC in first, SC INC in next. Repeat around. (9)
Round 4-8: SC in each around.
Fasten off and lightly stuff. Attach about 2 rounds up from the eyes.

    Mane

I prefer to use the softer types of chenille yarn (Premier Parfait Chunky for example) rather than the tougher blanket yarn. But this is a great place to experiment with.

If you are not getting a curl, tightening your tension with the slip stitches will help. You could also use a bigger hook for the chains, and a smaller hook for the slip stitches. Watch the video below or you can see the video for making the curls here.

When I sew them on, I use the ends to anchor the hair piece. Going through the spot on each side that I want the hair to be then coming up in the same stitch around the middle. Tie a knot and weave the ends in. Then I finish sewing them on with a non shedding acrylic yarn in a similar color. You can see the video for sewing the curls on here.

    Make 2:

Chain 12. Turn and slip stitch back until you reach the top. *Chain 12 again, then slip stitch back.* Repeat * * for a total of 3 locks of hair. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
~These pieces will be attached on either side of the horn.

    Make 2:

Chain 15. Turn and slip stitch back until you reach the top. *Chain 15 again, then slip stitch back.* Repeat * * for a total of 4 locks of hair. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
~These pieces will be attached behind the horn and between the ears.

    Make 6 of these:

Chain 18. Turn and slip stitch back until you reach the top. *Chain 18 again, then slip stitch back.* Repeat * * for a total of 5 locks of hair. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
    ~These will be attached next.
You can consider this a starting point and add more curls if you want a fuller mane.

Big Footed Snuggler Body Materials and Notes

    You will need:

    • 100g Bernat Baby Blanket yarn in Vanilla
    • 40g of an accent color in same type of yarn
    • 15g of Premier Parfait Chunky for tail
    • Crochet Hook in Size 4.5mm
    • Tapestry Needle
    • Polyfil
    • Stitch Marker

    Notes:
This unicorn is made from the feet up. You will make two feet, fastening off one and then attaching them together from the second one. The body will decrease and then increase into a flat disc. This is what you will use to sew on the head. Because of the nature of this pattern, the head will still “flop” but that is what I expect of the lovey/blanket form. The arms are attached with a long needle; the process is outlined here. The ears, horn, and arms are attached at the end.

When made with the recommended yarn, this snuggler is about 13 inches tall.

Substitute yarns could be Bernat Blanket yarn or Big Twist from Joann’s. You may need to change the hook size if you change the yarn.

Mix & Make Unicorn Big Footed Snuggler Pattern

This snuggler pattern uses a fun technique that helps the foot keep its shape without needing any stuffing. Watch this video to see the technique before you begin.

    Feet/Body:

Beginning with the feet, using accent color:
Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 8.
Round 2: SC INC in each around. (16)
Round 3: SC in the first, SC INC in the next. Repeat around. (24)
Round 4: SC in the first two, SC INC in the next. Repeat around (32)
Rounds 5: SC in each around. (32)
Round 6: SC in the first two, INV DEC in the next. Repeat around. (24)

    Change to vanilla.

Round 7: SC in the first 8. INV DEC 8x. (16)
Round 8: SC in the first 8. INV DEC 4X. (12)
Rounds 9-12: SC in each around. (12)

Stop here and fasten off for the first foot. On the second foot:

Round 13: SC 6x. Chain 4 and slip stitch to the first leg where you fastened off. SC in each stitch around on the leg (12). SC in each chain across. (4) SC in each stitch around the second leg. (12) SC on the other side of the chain. (4) Attach to the first SC with a slip stitch. (a total of 32) You can watch a video for this process here!

Insert the pom pom stuffing from the video here.
Rounds 14-20: SC in each around. (32) *7 total rows*
Round 21: SC in the first two. INV DEC in the next. Repeat around. (24)
Rounds 22-25: SC in each around. (24) *4 total rows*
Round 26: SC in the first. INV DEC in the next. Repeat around. (16)
Round 27: SC in each around. (16)
Round 28: INV DEC in each around. (8)
Round 29: SC INC in each around. (16)
Round 30: SC in the first stitch, SC INC in the next. Repeat around. (24)

Fasten off and leave a long tail to sew the head on with.

Using the same color as the hoof, attach the yarn around the post of the SC on round 4. SC around each post on round 4. Fasten off and tie a knot, then thread the ends through. See video here!

    Arms

    Using accent color:
Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 6.
Round 2: SC INC in each around. (12)
Round 3: SC in the first, SC INC in the next. Repeat around. (18)
Round 4: SC in the first, INV DEC in the next. Repeat around. (12)
Change to vanilla. Stuff hands. Stuff lightly halfway up the arm.
Round 5-15: SC in each around. (12)
Fasten off and leave a long tail to attach to the body around rounds 24-25. See my favorite method PDF here! Or video here!

Using the same color as the hoof, attach the yarn around the post of the SC on round 4. SC around each post on round 4. Fasten off and tie a knot, then thread the ends through. See video here!

Attaching the Head to the Body

Once you are ready to attach the head to the body, pin the flat disc that is at the top of the body where you want it on the head. Try to center it as best you can. I prefer mine to be slightly close to the nose so that the head flops forward more than backwards.

As you sew, go through both loops on the SC at the top of the disc. Pull tightly each time. Try to pull the disc out as you go, so that it lies as flat to the head as you can. You can see a video tutorial here!

    Tail

Chain 18. Turn and slip stitch back until you reach the top. *Chain 18 again, then slip stitch back.* Repeat * * for a total of 6 locks of hair. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Fold it in half so that there are two layers of three locks of hair and attach it to the bottom. I sewed mine between rounds 16 and 17.

    You will need:

    • 135g of Bernat Baby Blanket yarn in Vanilla

    • 15g of Premier Parfait Chunky for tail
    • Crochet Hook in Size 4.5mm
    • Tapestry Needle
    • Polyfil
    • Stitch marker

This unicorn is the more traditional stuffy, with a defined body and adorably long arms and legs. This is a good sized stuffy, when sitting it is about 10 inches tall. When you use the method I use here the arms and legs are movable! The ears, horn, and arms are attached at the end.

Substitute yarns could be Bernat Blanket yarn or Big Twist from Joann’s. You may need to change the hook size if you change the yarn.

Attach using my favorite way to attach plush limbs around round 6.

Attaching the Head to the Body

Once you are ready to attach the head to the body, pin the flat disc that is at the top of the body where you want it on the head. Try to center it as best you can. I prefer mine to be slightly close to the nose so that the head flops forward more than backwards.

Chubby Standing Body Materials and Notes

For the head you will need:

    • 80g of Bernat Baby Blanket yarn in Vanilla
    • 15g of Premier Parfait Chunky for tail
    • Crochet Hook in Size 4.5mm
    • Tapestry Needle
    • Polyfil
    • Stitch marker

This unicorn body is made from the feet up. You will make two feet, fastening off one and then attaching them together from the second one. Then once you have two pairs of feet, you will attach those to create the standing chubby body.

The head will be sewn on at the end. I highly recommend using “ami sticks” or even a knitting needle to help you position the head.

When made with the recommended yarn, this chubby standing unicorn is about 8 inches tall.

Substitute yarns could be Bernat Blanket yarn or Big Twist from Joann’s. You may need to change the hook size if you change the yarn.

Mix & Make Unicorn Chubby Body Pattern

    Legs (make 4 in total):

Make 2 of these. These are Legs “A”
Round 1: 8 SC in a magic circle.
Round 2: INC in each around. (16)
Round 3-6: SC in each around. (16)
    Fasten off and set aside.

Make 2 of these. These are Legs “B”
Round 1: 8 SC in a magic circle.
Round 2: INC in each around. (16)
Round 3-6: SC in each around. (16)
Round 7: SC in the next 8. Take off your stitch marker. Chain 2 and attach to one of the finished legs “A.” SC in each stitch around the Leg A (16). SC in each chain across. (2) SC in each stitch around the Leg B. (16) SC on the other side of the chains (2). (36) Put stitch marker on here.
Round 8: SC in each stitch around both legs. (36) SC in the next 6 and fasten off. Move on to the next pair.

You can see the entire process here!

    (Body cont’d):
    2nd Set of Legs:
You can find a video tutorial for this part here.
Follow the same steps as the first pair of legs, but do not fasten off.
Chain 1 and turn. SC in the next 14. This is the “belly” between the sets of legs.
Line up the legs so that each side of 14 touch. Chain one. SC through both sets of stitches to connect them.
It can be helpful to use stitch markers on both pairs of legs. Count 14 stitches back from where you fastened off on the first pair. There should be 14 stitches on one side, and 22 around the front.

    (Body cont’d):
Round 9: Chain 1. SC 3x in the gap between the sets of legs. SC in the 22 stitches around the legs until you reach the next gap. SC 3x in the gap. SC in the remaining 22 stitches. (50)

    (Body cont’d):
Round 10: SC in each around. (50)
Round 11: SC in the first 3. INV DEC in the next. Repeat this pattern all the way around. (40)
Round 12: SC in the first 2. INV DEC in the next. Repeat this pattern all the way around. (30)
Begin to stuff here, making sure you get the feet well. Then continue to stuff the body as you close.
Round 13: SC in the first, INV DEC in the next. Repeat this pattern all the way around. (20)
Round 14: SC in the first 2, INV DEC in the next. Repeat this pattern all the way around. (15)
Fasten off leaving a piece long enough to sew the top hole closed and attach the head.
Pinch the hole closed so that you can sew it closed in a line. Make sure you stuff before you completely sew it shut, so you can get the top “gaps.”

Attaching the Head to the Body

When you attach the head, you will angle it on the edge. The tip of the nose will hang over the edge and you will attach it by using the long end from sewing the remaining hole closed. You will use about 4 rows of the head to be flat on the top edge of the body.

I used knitting needles with silicone beads on the ends to keep the head in place. You could also use Ami Stix. You can see a video tutorial here!

    Tail

Chain 18. Turn and slip stitch back until you reach the top. *Chain 18 again, then slip stitch back.* Repeat * * for a total of 6 locks of hair. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Fold it in half so that there are two layers of three locks of hair and attach it towards the back of the unicorn.
