So, in the last few weeks I have been loving anything with flamingos. Before I never really thought of them beyond the plastic ones that people stick in their yard in Florida. But all of a sudden I have developed an extreme fondness for them. Naturally, I had to make a crochet flamingo hat. Because that makes sense.
Well in my little character hat loving world it does. So I did. Enjoy!
You will need:
- size H (5.00mm) hook
- Red Heart with Love in Bubblegum or Hot Pink, yellow, white and black.
- Yarn needles for sewing
- Clover Pom Pom Maker
Start with my Double Crochet Beanie pattern
For 9-12 Month and Toddler:
Beak
With White:
Row 1: Chain 7
Row 2: In second chain from hook HDC. HDC in each stitch across. Chain 1 and turn. (6 HDC)
Row 3-9: HDC in each stitch across. Chain 1 and turn. (6 HDC)
Now SC around the edge, but stop when you get to row 9. Attach your black yarn. Cut your white yarn, leaving a long end for sewing.
Row 10: HDC in each stitch across. Chain 1 and turn. (6 HDC)
Row 11: HDC in each stitch across. Chain 1 and turn (6 HDC)
Row 12: Decrease HDC, HDC in next 3, 2 HDC in last stitch. Chain 1 and turn. (6 HDC)
Row 13: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC in next 3, Decrease HDC. (6 HDC)
Row 14: HDC in next 2, Decrease HDC, Decrease HDC.
Fasten off, and leave a long enough tail to sew on. Sew the back portion with black yarn, white portion with white yarn.

Fasten off, and leave a long enough tail to sew on. Sew the back portion with black yarn, white portion with white yarn.
Eyes
In Magic circle DC 8. Fasten off, leaving a long enough tail to sew on eyelashes. Follow my instructions for eyelashes by visiting my Pony Hat Post.
Feather Tuft
Make one half of a pom pom by only wrapping yarn on one side of the maker. I used very little yarn, barely covering the plastic. Leave a long tail for sewing.
Leg Tassels:
For a 9-12 month and Toddler size chain 30
For a Child and Teen/Adult size chain 35
In 4th chain from the hook place 3 DC. Chain 6 and slip stitch in the same stitch. Slip stitch over to the next stitch. Chain 6 and slip stitch in the same stitch. Repeat for a third time. Slip stitch to reach your chains. DC up toward the ear piece. Slip stitch onto the base of the hat. SC back down until you reach the toe part. HDC in each stitch until you reach the opposite side of the foot. Slip stitch onto the DC and fasten off. Use the tail to sew together any holes.
Repeat on the opposite side.

Oh my goodness! This is too cute! I'm a big fan of the crochet animal hat craze, but I've never seen a flamingo before! I'm totally adding this one to my list!
I'd love if you'd link up to my weekly Yarn Fanatic Party! http://philwife.blogspot.com/2015/02/yarn-fanatic-party-24.html

Love the pattern but a bit confused on the feet part. Do you really want us to only chain 6 after putting 3 DC's in the first "toe" for the last 2 toes?
kali@thefriendlyredfox.com
Sorry for the confusion! Each DC is a "toe" and you chain 6 and the slip stitch in the DC. You do that three times in each of the three DC. Then you will come back and HDC in each chain. Hope this helps!

Makes perfect sense. I've been hopped up on cold meds all week so my reading comprehension skills aren't the best. Love the hat, my daughter says all her friends will want one.

Hi Kali I have tried to make these feet a million times with no luck do you by any chance have a video on how to make the feet?

Hey have you thought of doing a nose that point out from the hat like a real flamingo beak? My daughter thought that would be cool with it and a tail in the back.
