Free Unicorn Crochet Pattern Notes
Meet Magic, the free unicorn crochet pattern! You will love how it works up quickly with blanket yarn. With endless color combinations, this amigurumi version is the perfect size for small hands and a quick make! With the recommended yarn it should be about 8 inches tall.
This is another pattern in my “squishy” series! I called them that as an ironic nickname, and then it slowly became the official term. They are made with blanket yarn, and the body is intentionally understuffed. This makes them adorably squishy! You will get hooked, and want to make the entire collection.
While this free unicorn crochet pattern is made to have a squishy body, the head is fully stuffed. The arms and feet are not, however. I found this was the best way to get the cuddly body while keeping the shape that I want.

Unicorns are always a hit- and this free unicorn crochet pattern can be personalized in so many ways. This pattern uses three different types of yarn. Bernat Blanket Baby in Vanilla is used for the body, Premier Parfait Chunky for the mane and tail, and worsted weight yarn for the horn. You don’t need very much of each type, but using three types really helped me get the look I was going for. Obviously, you can make it in different types of yarn, just know it may look different.

Materials you’ll need
To get started making this free unicorn crochet pattern, you’ll want to gather all your materials first.
You will need:
- 60g Bernat Baby blanket in vanilla
- Small amount of worsted weight yarn for the horn (I used Caron Simply Soft in Autumn Maize)
- 50g Premier Chunky Parfait for the mane and tail
- 12mm safety eyes
- Crochet Hook in Size 4.5mm
- Tapestry Needle
- Polyfil
- stitch marker

Notes:
This unicorn is made from the bottom to the head, all in one piece. You will intentionally understuff the body for a more floppy, silly look. Over-stuffing will change the look dramatically. You will insert a neck strengthener which will help with the shape and stability of the head, while allowing you to understuff the bottom and stuff the head a little more.
The arms, feet, ears, mane, tail and horn are attached at the end. The feet are attached dangling from the body.
The arms are attached with a long needle. The video for that is here.
You can use safety eyes or try out embroidered eyes so it would be safe for a baby/toddler. I have a collection of embroidery videos here.
Substitute yarns could be Premier Basix Chenille yarn or Big Twist from Joann’s. You may need to change the hook size if you change the yarn. Â

Feet (Make 2)
Round 1: 10 SC in a magic circle (10)

Round 2: INC in the first 2, SC in the next 2. INC in the next 2. SC in the next 2. (12)

Fasten off and leave a long tail to sew it on with. Gently tug the sides where you added the increases so the nose is more oval. Attach it right beneath the eyes.

Pointed Ears
In a magic circle, SC 4x, chain twice, and then SC 4x more.
Do not close the circle- fasten off and leave a tail long enough to sew on the head. I attached mine above the eyes, around Rounds 20-21.

Horn
In worsted weight yarn:
Round 1: In a magic circle, 6 SC. (6)
Round 2: SC in each around. (6)
Round 3: SC in first, SC INC in next. Repeat around.(9)
Round 4-6: SC in each around. (9)
Fasten off and leave a long tail to attach to the head with. Center it between the eyes on round 20. Lightly stuff it before you sew, if you prefer.

Mane
I prefer to use the softer types of chenille yarn (Premier Parfait Chunky for example) rather than the tougher blanket yarn. But this is a great place to experiment with.
If you are not getting a curl, tightening your tension with the slip stitches will help. You could also use a bigger hook for the chains, and a smaller hook for the slip stitches.
When I sew them on, I use the ends to anchor the hair piece. Going through the spot on each side that I want the hair to be then coming up in the same stitch around the middle. Tie a knot and weave the ends in. Then I finish sewing them on with a non shedding acrylic yarn in a similar color.
Make 2:
Chain 10. Turn and slip stitch back until you reach the top. Chain 10 again, then slip stitch back. You should have a total of 2 locks of hair (curls). Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
These pieces will be attached on either side of the horn.
Make 2:
Chain 12. Turn and slip stitch back until you reach the top. *Chain 12 again, then slip stitch back.* Repeat for a total of 3 locks of hair. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
These pieces will be attached between the ears.
Make 3 of these:
Chain 12. Turn and slip stitch back until you reach the top. *Chain 12 again, then slip stitch back.* Repeat for a total of 4 locks of hair. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
These pieces will be attached behind the horn.
NOTE:
Sometimes, I need an extra curl in the front, so I add an extra chain of 12. You can add extra curls for a fuller mane.

Tail
Chain 12. Turn and slip stitch back until you reach the top. Chain 12 again, then slip stitch back. Repeat for a total of 6 locks of hair. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Fold it in half so that there are two layers of three locks of hair and attach it to the bottom. I sewed mine between rounds 4 and 5.

Hi. My name is Lucy. I’m so glad I found you. I made my first teddy bear, using your video tutorial. It was so easy, I have now made a squishy bear. Thank you!!!
Hi Kali! I am making the Unicorn Squishy. On the horn, working the increases in round 3, comes out to 9 stitches not 8. Is this correct? Your directions say 8. Just want to be sure my eyes aren’t deceiving me. I am using the pattern on your website. I love your patterns. I have made many. I just bought the Mix and Make Unicorn pattern. Unicorns are my granddaughters’s favorites!
Hi! It’s supposed to be 9! Just a typo. Fixed now – thank you!!!:)
I love all things related to unicorns. These squishy crochet unicorns are the cutest. I am pinning to get my mother in law to make for my daughter soon! Thanks.
Completed a little unicorn. Easy to read pattern, great pix. Will definitely be making more.
