Free Crochet Doll Pattern- The Friendly Mae

The
Friendly Mae Doll is a free crochet doll pattern, about 9 inches tall and 4.5 inches wide (not
including the arms and hair.) Mae works up fairly quickly so she is a
great last minute gift or item for craft fairs. For Mae, I recommend
using size 4 worsted weight yarn in whatever color you prefer. This
particular one used Red Heart Super Saver in Aran. I also recommend I
Love this Yarn in Ivory and Stylecraft Special Chunky in Cream. The hair
is Lion Brands Silky Twist. The dress is Red Heart’s with Love. The
beauty of the doll is that you are able to customize her in any way you
would like! Enjoy making her!

Abbreviations
SC– single crochetSC INC– single crochet increase (2 SC in each stitch)

INV DEC
– Invisible decrease (put hook through the FRONT LOOP ONLY of two consecutive stitches [two loops on hook] Yarn over pull through both loops. [two loops on hook] Yarn over pull through two loops)

Magic Circle– Make a loop, leaving a long tail to work with. Insert hook in center of loop, yarn over and draw up a loop. Yarn over, pull through to make the first chain (this does not count as a stitch!). Continue to crochet over the loop and tail with the number of stitches called for. (If you need 6 SC, then crochet 6 SC inside the ring.) Pull the tail to close the circle.

Always move your stitch marker to the last stitch in the round. This pattern is worked in continuous rounds.

*Lightly Stuff as you go!

Fasten off.
Repeat for the second leg but do not fasten off. Instead, chain 3 and then SC in the next stitch of the other leg. Take care to crochet over the tail left over by fastening off. SC around the entire leg. When you come to the three chains, SC in each chain around the next leg. SC over the chain back to the other leg. In the last SC on the last chain place your stitch marker. (This is round 19.)
Please watch this video on how to attach the legs!

Hair
(If you used a 3.75 hook for the doll use a 4.0. If you used a 4.0 use a 4.5)
Use the Lion Brand Silky Twist yarn. It is the best yarn I have found for this type of hair. As you crochet let some of the little loops in the yarn come through… do not crochet too tightly. Looser stitches will let that cute hair come through! I would pull up little fluffs as I went. Also check the “wrong” side. It may look better on the doll than the other!
Round 1: In a magic circle, 6 SC.
Round 2: SC INC in each around. (12)
Round 3: SC in first, SC INC in next. Repeat around. (18)
Round 4: SC in first 2, SC INC in next. Repeat around. (24)
Round 5: SC in first 3, SC INC in next. Repeat around. (30)
Round 6: SC in first 4, SC INC in next. Repeat around. (36)
Round 7: SC in first 5, SC INC in next. Repeat around. (42)
Round 8: SC in first 6, SC INC in next. Repeat around. (48)
Round 9: SC in first 7, SC INC in next. Repeat around. (54)
Rounds 10-11: DC in each stitch around. (54)
Fasten off and leave a long tail to sew on.
I switch to the DC because it helps to have some “movement” when you sew the hair on. Adjust the hair as needed when you sew on. I liked to pull it when I wanted a little “wave.” Pin the top with pins as you sew. This will make it MUCH easier.

Ears
Chain 3. In first chain place two DCs. Fasten off and pull tight. Sew onto head on the same rows as the eyes.

Bow
Chain 5. In 4th chain from the end place 3 TRC. Chain 3 and slip stitch in the same hole.
Chain 4 from the last chain. 3 TRC in the same hole. Chain 3 and slip stitch back in the same hole. Fasten off, leaving a LONG tail. Wrap around and tie.

Either chain long enough to go around the head or use a piece of yarn. Tie the bow to the band.

Make the Dress
To make the dress, chain to a length that will reach around the body. Due to the variations of yarn, amount of stuffing, and which hook you use, it is really difficult to give an exact number. Make it long enough to overlap the slightest bit. I chained a couple more than the number of stitches around the body, which for Mae, is 42. Connect the chain with a slip stitch, making a circle. Make sure that the chains do not twist. Chain 2.
Rows 1-11: DC in each stitch across. Slip stitch to the first DC. Chain 2.
Row 12: DC INC in each stitch across.
Fasten off leaving a long tail to sew on.
Bring the dress right under the pink puff sleeves. Sew along the top of the collar.
