I had a couple of puzzlers when naming this pattern... I usually call these headbands, but that seems to confuse people if they are larger like this one. The size of this one is really ideal for the cold winter months. So I went with "ear warmer." Also, most of my other patterns are very easy to name. "Fox hat," "penguin hat," "Katniss cowl"... You see what I mean. So I decided to name it after my very gracious, very beautiful sister, Katelyn. (That is her beautiful face in the picture. Thanks Katelyn!)
You will need...
Size 4 Worsted Weight Yarn (I love Simply Soft by Caron for headbands! So shiny and soft...)
Size 5.00 hook
yarn needle for sewing
3 matching buttons
You will need to know how to:
Chain
DC (double crochet)
FPDC (front post double crochet)
BPDC (back post double crochet)
If you have made my Katniss Cowl or my Ribs and Ridges Scarf you will be very familiar with these stitches. In fact, this is a great project to get comfortable with the post stitches before you begin that giant scarf!
Let us begin.
Chain 77. (This will be longer than most heads, but the post stitches shrink it down. And we will be overlapping and sewing it together at the end so you need a little room for that.)
Row 1:In the third stitch from your hook start your first DC. DC in each stitch across.Chain 2 and turn.
Row 2: DC in first stitch. Then FPDC around the post of the next stitch. Then BPDC. Alternate across. Chain 2 and turn.
Row 3: DC in every stitch across. Chain 2 and turn.
Row 4: DC in every stitch across. Chain 2 and turn.
Row 5: DC in first stitch. Then FPDC around the post of the next stitch. Then BPDC. Alternate across. Chain 2 and turn.
Row 6: DC in every stitch across. Chain 2 and turn.
Row 7: DC in every stitch across. Chain 2 and turn.
Row 8: DC in first stitch. Then FPDC around the post of the next stitch. Then BPDC. Alternate across.
I like to SC around the edges to give it a nice clean look. The overlap the ends (your nicest looking edge on top!) and using your yarn needle, sew together. Then attach your buttons. I placed mine on each row of post stitches.
And you are done!
I am curious though... would you call this an ear warmer or a headband?

I do not have a problem with individuals making and selling items using
this pattern. I do have a problem if you take my photos and the credit:)
No big deal, just use your own pictures and link back to this page if
you are selling online! Thanks so much!

This is such a pretty pattern! When I was a young girl we called these ski-bands because skiers were rarely without them while on the slopes. I think I will make this for myself as soon as I finish everyone's Christmas gifts. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful pattern! Blessings!

The rows that have the FPDC and BPDC are you to alternate between just FPDC and BPDC or do you include the DC in that too? Hope that makes sense..
kali@thefriendlyredfox.com
Just alternate between FPDC and BPDC. The DC is just for the first stitch! Hope that helps!

Thank you for the pattern. I'm not a headband person but somehow, I just felt like I had to make this one ... and it's gonna be lime-green in colour 🙂

Love the pattern ..using the Caron wool as well! Thanks

So are the buttons not functional in this? Mine is coming out super large.
kali@thefriendlyredfox.com
They are not! I made it long so that it could overlap and sew the buttons on top. I was never a fan of having to button things on my head, so I went this route!

i, too, have found using the correct hook, yarn, etc this is a large headband, so i have decreased stitches and using smaller hook. Why is this? i do not crochet loose or tight, almost always true to gauge
kali@thefriendlyredfox.com
I made it long so that it could overlap for the buttons:) I may have to post my gauge, I crochet fairly tightly. But it is pretty large in general. I hope you can find something that works for you!

A gauge would be most helpful before I start. I am home from work today sick and looks like a great quick project. Thank you in advance.
O TORRES
I call them ear warmers. A headband for me, sits high on the head and behind the ears. Lovely. Thank you.

I just made this today! It turned out great! Thanks so much for the pattern. And I too would call this an ear warmer.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your pattern. However, I am having trouble getting it big enough. It's way off. I believe I may crochet too tightly and I've tried twice. I think I'll be using a bigger hook!

I have seen patterns like this go by both names.

These ear warmers are just as great as the matching Cowl! Keep up the good work, you are a wonderful designer! I may have to make this tonight...thanks for the pattern. I'm making the Katniss cowl for my youngest daughter for a Christmas gift this year. She may as well have both...I'm going to work them up in a super soft organic cotton yarn for three season wearability. But I think I'll crochet up these ear warmers for all the girls.....
