Materials you’ll need
To get started making this free love bug crochet pattern, you’ll want to gather all your materials first.
You will need:
- 20g Plush Yarn (I used Bernat Baby Blanket in different colors)
- 8g Contrast color in the same type of yarn
- 15mm safety eyes
- Crochet Hook in Size 4.5mm
- Tapestry Needle
- Polyfil
- stitch marker

Notes:
This Love Bug pattern is super quick to make and a fun, no-sew project! You will make the body first, then crochet on the feet and the antennae. The only reason I recommend a yarn needle is to sew in the ends for these additions.
You can use safety eyes or try out embroidered eyes so it would be safe for a baby/toddler. I have a collection of embroidery videos here.
Substitute yarns could be Premier Basix Chenille yarn or Big Twist from Joann’s. You may need to change the hook size if you change the yarn.
Love Bug Crochet Pattern
Body
Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 8.
Round 2: SC INC in each around. (16)
Round 3: SC in the first, SC INC in the next. Repeat around. (24)
Rounds 4-8: SC in each stitch around. (24) *5 Rows*
Attach eyes here. For the purple love bug I attached them between rounds 5 and 6. The pink love bug I attached them a little higher, between rounds 6 and 7. Each time they were 4 stitches apart.
Round 9: SC in the first, INV DEC in the next. Repeat around. (16)
Begin to stuff here.
Round 10: INV DEC in each around. (8)
Finish any stuffing, then sew the remaining hole closed.
Feet
Using the contrasting color:
Between rounds 2 and three, directly under an eye, insert your hook so that it goes through about 4 stitches. Leaving a couple inch tail, attach the contrasting yarn to the end of your hook and pull through those four stitches. Lightly slip stitch, so that there is a line left above the stitches on top. This is the loop that you will crochet around. See here for a video!

Chain 1 then, crocheting around that loop, 2HDC, 2DC, 2HDC, chain one, then slip stitch into the loop. Fasten off, tie a knot with the two remaining ends and weave into the body.
Repeat on the other side, under the other eye.

Antennae
*Note: You may need to go down a hook size or two depending on your tension!
Put your hook through a stitch through the top of the head, around round 9, slightly inside the eye. Pull the yarn through, leaving a couple inch long tail.
Hold the tail and chain 10. Count back 5 chains and slip stitch. Chain 5 again and slip stitch in the same spot. (This makes the double loops on the antennae.) Slip stich in the remaining 4 stitches. Fasten off and use your needle to make a few passes to attach the other end down. Tie a knot and weave in the ends. Repeat on the other side. See the video process here!

Adorable. Do they need any weight in the bottom to help them stand?
You could definitely weight the bottom! It would help. They can stand on their own but their not super sturdy. Too chubby! 😀
I haven’t crocheted in a few years. The love bug is by far the easiest, quick, fun pattern.
So glad I found your page. I’m having so much fun. Have made the tiny turtle, the silly bird, and now the love bug.
Thank you so much!
Cute!
How long does it take a beginner to crochet?
If it’s your first time with plush yarn, I’d say carve out a few hours for the learning curve. Otherwise, maybe an hour to hour and a half for the first one and shorter for the next ones?
How big would the love bug be if I used not plush size 4 yarn?
Pretty small! I haven’t tested it out, so you’ll have to let me know 🙂
